If six gumdrops and ten lollipops cost $1.36, but six lollipops and 10 gumdrops cost $1.20, how much does each lollipop and gumdrop cost?

Answer:
6G + 10L = $1.36 --> 60G + 100L = $13.60
10G + 6L = $1.20 --> 60G + 36L = $7.20

64L = $6.40
L = $0.10
G = $0.06

Lollipops cost 10cents, gumdrops cost 6cents. Gumdrops = overpriced.

Answer:

good 'ol Trig.

x = gumdrops, y = lollipops

6x + 10y = 1.36
10x + 6y = 1.20

Add them together

16x + 16y = 2.56

Divide by 16

x + y = .16

x = .16 -y

Substitute in first equation

6 (.16 - y) + 10y = 1.36
.96 - 6y + 10y = 1.36
.96 + 4y = 1.36
4y = .4
y = .1

Therefore x = .06

So gumdrops cost 6 cents and lollipops are a dime.

So that's how it was done back in the Stone Age when you were in high school, eh?

My school lumped together Trig and Algebra II... or at least the honors class took them together. I don't think it's that unusual.
