Answer:
32 steps.

Paula on the middle.
John = P + 8.
Sarah = J - 3 = P + 5
Tom = S + 6 = P + 11
TOP = T + 5 = P + 16

Therefore, the middle step must have 16 steps above and below it. Ergo, 32 steps (and the landing below).

Cut one letter from each word and "paste" the remaining letters together to spell out a new word. For example, in SPY + THORN, cut the S and the R to get PYTHON.

1. STOP + MATCH
2. PLUSH + CARET
3. WHERE + DIETARY
4. SEQUEL + ACHING
5. COMMITS + SCARY
6. DEATH + PRONE
7. FROWN + TIMER
8. BAILING + DUAL

June 30th Answer:

33 steps.
If N is the number of the top step, then Tom is on step (N-5), Sarah is on step (N-11), John is on step (N-8), and Paula is on step (N-16). Since Paula is on the middle step, there are 16 + 1 + 16 steps in all.

Answer:
14. The mathematical operator "->" indicates that one must square the three numbers before it and sum the results. Ergo, 1*1 + 2*2 + 3*3 = 14.

ELTON JOHN / ARTHUR ASHE / TRUMAN CAPOTE / PIERCE BROSNAN / JACKSON POLLOCK / TAYLOR HICKS / GRANT WOOD / WILSON PICKETT

July 4th Answer:
I should have realized it would be historical in nature. At least, American historical. Each person's first name is the last name of a former American president, save Elton John. For the record, there was no President Reginald, so his birth name wouldn't cut the mustard, either.

You have two hourglass sand timers, one that runs for 3 minutes and another that runs for 5 minutes. How do you time 7 minutes using these two sand timers?

July 9th Answer:

(3 minutes) Run both timers until the 3 minute timer runs out. You now have 2 minutes remaining on the 5-minute timer.

(2 minutes) Turn the 3-minute timer over and wait until the 5-minute timer runs out in 2 more minutes. You now have 1 minute remaining on the 3-minute timer.

(2 minutes) Turn the 3 minute timer over and let it run out.

Spidey - your response doesn't give a continuous 7-minute block of time.

July 9th Answer:

Yeah, I drew a blank ('cause this is similiar to the water bottle problem). However, you just gave me another answer.

Run both timers until the 3 minute is empty. You have two minutes left in the 5 minute timer. Pour that into the 3 minute timer.

Refill the 5 minute timer. Now you have seven minutes total (5 minutes in one, 2 minutes in the other).

July 9th Answer:
The official calender answer coincided with EricBess's answer. Spidey's method (which I came up with) works if you start both timers, wait for the three-minute one to run out and then flip the 5-minute one (with two minutes remaining) and start timing at that point. Then, once it runs out, flip it again for the final five minutes. No need to crack open the timers and move sand around. :p
