Warhammer Quest: Death Below Karak Azgal

Oversoul

The Tentacled One
Dorgath lifts the iron grate with only slight difficulty, revealing a stinking pit of green slime. There are some objects in the slime, but before Dorgath can make out what they are, he winces from the horrendous fumes.

Carrow readies his sword, but if there are any evil things in the slime pit, they apparently prefer to stay there...

...for now.

"you guys want to lower me down so I can check out those items?" Dorgath ties a rope around his waist and gives the end to the others, wraps a cloth around his head to filter out the fumes, and goes down to investigate the items.

Wait, what? I don't mean that the distance between the floor and the surface of the slime varies based on the height of the observer. That would be some pretty interesting magic, but no. I really do mean that the slime goes all the way up to the level of the floor, or almost all the way up, anyway. Let's call it exactly six inches. The iron grate, before it was lifted, was almost exactly level with the floor. The surface of the slime is six inches below that. If the slime in the pit is only knee-deep, you could easily step in and out of the pit. On the other hand, if the pit is actually a mile deep, you'd probably plunge into the slime and die or something. No one knows how deep the pit is, as there is slime in the way. So while it is technically possible to suspend Dorgath over the slime, that wouldn't be necessary to investigate the objects in the pit. Dorgath's arm is easily long enough to reach in and pull them out from a crouching position, although he'd probably still want to cover his face. This stuff smells pretty bad.

Canonball!!!!!!! We can pull him out by the rope.... ha ha ha
Why not stick something useless in the slime first to see if it's a problem

Oooh.... I guess I got confused by when you called it a "pit" then, because if the slime is almost level with the floor, how would we know it's a "pit"? I thought it was like 10 feet down or something and the slime was at the bottom.

"Okay elf, throw something in the pit first."

He did suggest thorwing himself into the slime, so that's somewhat useless....... Why not one end of the rope?

Do we really have to put something in the slime? Can't we just go explore somewhere else and come back to this later if we get stuck?

I didn't suggest throwing myself into the slime, I was trying to get to those items which are in the slime.

So if the slime is up near the floor and if the items are within reach, Dorgath will cover his nose and mouth with a cloth and try to get the items.

Dorgath has a cloth?

Throg has an idea. He will chop off one of the arms of a slain hobgoblin and dip it in the slime to test its corrosive properties. If the arm melts, he will use one of the slain hobgoblin's axes (perhaps the armless one) to poke at the objects in the slime and perhaps lift them out by scooching them against the wall of the pit until they come over the edge and fall upon the floor.

Throg soaks a severed hobgoblin arm in the slime and holds it out. This raises some of the stench out of the pit, which causes everyone to take a step back. His suspicion turns out to be right. The slime never comes close to melting the entire arm, but it stills seems to be highly corrosive, eventually burning off most of the skin and making even more of a stink in the air around it. Throg patiently probes the objects in the pit with hobgoblin weapons, careful not to splash the slime onto himself. After a few minutes, he succeeds in lifting the objects out of the pit. No one seems eager to waste drinking water washing the slime off, so Throg wipes them off on a dead hobgoblin, who does not protest.

Throg got some human bones!

Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones!

Throg will momentarily ponder his own mortality. Then he'll evaluate the strength of the bones by smacking one (a femur, if possible) against the floor.
