Alas, the wood elves seem to lack the good sense to stock Bugman's beer. The only Bugman's beer to be found is Dorgath's own supply of Bugman's XXXXXX.

Dorgath resignedly takes whatever the Elves have to offer, because at this point, anything will do, sadly.

"Give me an empty mug, dwarf, and I'll fill it with something that tastes equivalent to Bugman's Best."

Throg will wander out of sight for a few moments and come back with a full mug.

"Here you go. It's a bit warm."

Well, I have no idea what Dorgath just drank, but running with the assumption that it doesn't kill him, let's see...

You arise the next morning and the wood elves begin congregating outside the temple again. You witness a heated argument between some of the elven lords. It seems that word of Coril's treachery has gotten out, and has upset them greatly. All of the lords seem to be convinced that Coril is planning to raid either a vault nearby or a temple farther south, in the Pine Crags. But they are divided on what to do. One lord believes that the vault, being a more valuable target, needs to be protected immediately. A second lord believes that the vault is already secure and that the temple is more vulnerable, so they should gather troops and push through the invading goblins to reach the temple. A third lord also wants to gather troops, but wants to unite them with Lord Cael's larger army before facing the goblins.

Ariel arrives with Jekaena in tow. Ariel announces that she will personally see to the security of the vault here and the protection of its valuable artifacts. She also judges that the goblins and other invasion forces are too thick to make a large-scale push to the south, and that the troops should gather and await Lord Cael's return.

Jekaena asserts that she can navigate a path through the Pine Crags and get to the temple. After all, she needs to get to Welhallas to restore the afflicted Heart, and she'll have to go through the Pine Crags to get there anyway, with the rest of the forest so overrun with invaders. The lords protest that it's too dangerous. She counters that she already made the journey once before, at night, alone, with her injury still fresh, without her magic cane, so she can damn well do it during the daytime with her cane and with the protection not only of brave elven warriors Carrow and Revaethan, but also the humans, Tomas, Ty, and Kelgar (she gets the names right this time), whatever Throg is (she uses those exact words), and that dwarf there too (she also uses those exact words).

At this point, the priestesses begin shouting at Jekaena for her impertinence, but she conjures up a small thundercloud over their heads and demands that they shut up. They glare at her a lot, but don't say anything more. The others also seem to be subdued by Jekaena's display of magic. Jekaena then asks if she can take her new friends and go traverse the Pine Crags already: she wants to get to the temple before Coril can raid it and she can't walk very quickly these days...

PEE-PEE!!!!! Dorgath just drank pee-pee!
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Aside: this is Throg's thoughts, not mine. I'm much more mature than this.

A contingent of elves escort you and your mounts to the Pine Crags, but the path is too narrow for an army, so it will just be the six primary members of the party, plus Revaethan and Jekaena. As this is a new "deep" (sort of), all of your Luck and "once per adventure" stuff resets and Throg's Chalice of Night gets 5 charges. All of your temporary or "during the next adventure" stuff will expire at the conclusion of this dungeon, so keep that in mind (Dorgath has a blessing that has been giving him boosted Strength, and Carrow gets a one-shot Attack-doubling that he hasn't used yet, both of which expire once this dungeon is complete [addendum: Kelgar also has a blessing on his hammer that will expire at the conclusion of the dungeon, which I missed when I first posted this). I'll post updated character sheets, as the ones on the board now are probably getting a bit old.

You might also want to consider your marching order. The Pine Crags can get cramped and attacks could come from anywhere. Keep in mind that Jekaena isn't a trained warrior. She has studied powerful magic, but she's an academic, trained to perform magic slowly and deliberately, in safe, controlled environments. Tapping into magical energies repeatedly, while moving through a dungeon and facing attacks from monsters, takes a special kind of focus. To make matters worse, she is crippled: when assassins attacked the party of the high priestess, Jekaena escaped, but her left foot was badly mangled and it has failed to respond to healing magics. She has an enchanted cane that brings her Move up to 3, but that still means she slows the rest of the party down.

However, it's not all bad news. Jekaena is equipped with a few defensive items, including her Quarterstaff of Argwylon, which she can use to try to deflect incoming attacks (she remains a vulnerable target, despite these safety measures). And she'll try to support the party with magic. Unlike Tomas, she has no Power Store. Also, she is unaccustomed to combat, so she'll try to cast whatever spells people in the party ask her to cast. Jekaena responds to the following instructions (or ones that are recognizably similar)...

"Get them!" or "Attack <target>!" (cast Lightning Bolt, possibly indicating a target)
"Give <name> Strength!" (cast Strength on a Warrior)
"Protect yourself!" (cast Glittering Robe on self)
"Heal!" or "Heal <name>!" (cast Finger of Life or Heal Wounds on a Warrior)

Here are the details on those spells...

-Lightning Bolt: Costs 4. Line of sight attack spell. 2D6 Wounds with no modifiers for armor.
-Strength: Costs 2. Targets a single Warrior. Grants +1 Strength. Cannot be used on the same target more than once per turn.
-Glittering Robe: Costs 3. Self-cast. Creates a glowing cloak that absorbs 1D6 Wounds. Lasts one turn.
-Finger of Life: Costs 3. Targets a single Warrior. Roll 1D6. On a 4,5, or 6, restore that many Wounds.
-Heal Wounds: Costs 4. Targets a single Warrior. Restores 1D6 Wounds.

Character sheets in the main thread should not be up-to-date. As usual, it would be prudent to check if your numbskull of a DM missed anything obvious.

Suuuuure......

Dorgath will take the lead. But when you say
The Pine Crags can get cramped and attacks could come from anywhere.
Do you mean the side too? Or just front and back? How open is this "path"?

I'm thinking Jekaena's first action when we get into combat should be Protecting Herself (Casting Glittering Robe - if the Winds of Magic allow) and then see what's happening after that, whether Healing, Strength Buff, or simply Attacking needs to be done.

Current marching order:

For corridors, I think:

Throg and Ty (both have great melee damage and good defense)
Revaethan and Dorgath (the next best with great melee damage and good defense)
Tomas (needs to be protected!)
Carrow and Kelgar (the lowest melee damage (aside from Tomas) and okay defense, enough to help out in case attacked from the rear, and Carrow has good ranged attack for the front)

For larger chambers, I think to just combine the first two ranks and the last two ranks.
If Jekaena is the only addition to the group then having her join ranks next to Tomas seems logical. In the Pine Crags we might want to move Revaethan into more of a scouting role, perhaps with Ty supporting, so as to not just waltz into groups of enemies with the clatter of the heavier-armored members of the party warning them of our approach. We might also consider moving a heavier melee fighter into the last rank, to better cover the rear...:)

That sounds good. So how about:

Throg and Revaethan
Dorgath and Kelgar
Tomas and Jekaeana
Ty and Carrow

Is there a place where Throg can park his ass?
Also, has anyone considered chopping off Jekaeana's* foot and replacing it with something more functional? Like a peg or a wheel or something?

*I'm not spelling this again. From now on she's "Jake".

I've just been copy/pasting Jekaena/Revaethan all this time...it's easier than trying to spell them out...lol

That order would be fine. Like I said though, I think having Revaethan scout ahead, especially in wooded areas, might be prudent...:)

I just remember the 'ae' part of their name to help

Ah yes, I didn't fully understand the scouting suggestion, that's fine too.
