*Rondo is bringing up the rear, keeping a close eye on the doorway to the main corridor, provided Si'Nat isn't piling furniture up against it...;)*

Okay, you open the door and see a little 10' area with some short stairs going down to the north for 10'. At the bottom, you see a door in the east wall.

Cugel cautiously descends the stairs, carefully checking as he goes, until he reaches the door, which he examines also.

*Well, my vote is to finish investigating the first level before we go through the door at the bottom of the stairs, but in any case I'll continue to watch our backs.*

"Well, this door appears just as safe as the others, but if we want to come back later, that option is still open."

"Is this 'short stairs' the same depth downward as the other stairs we have seen? If not, this may not be a whole level lower, and we should investigate, if it is, then my vote goes with Rondo."

"I'll work on saving us some time..."

(kindly pushes his way down the short stairs to the door, and opens it...)

"So what's do we have here..."

Holds the torch in the stairway...

**I agree with TomB on doing the 1st level first... but, I also get the impression this might just be a single room and is worth investigating...**

(I think all the stairs are "uniform" length in step height. So I've shown the length of the stairs in the maps, I believe... these stairs only span 10'. The ones east of you and parallel start earlier but go down at least 10' (your torchlight didn't show where they ended). The stairs to the south and running west-east go down for a long way, I think at least 30'... so you have to take the info and interpret it the best you can.

I will say this, now that I think about it: the palace is at least two stories *above* ground and you are on the ground floor)

Si'Nat opens the door and finds...

Another vast room whose edges can't be seen by the torchlight at the door. However, the remains of bunks, blankets, wooden tables, and stools litter the floor in broken pieces. Five corpses litter the floor near the center. Two are human, dressed like palace guards. The other corpses are of a small human-like race with grotesque faces and livid gray skin.

"Well... Well..."

(moves forward, sword at the ready, to make sure the "corpses" on the floor are just that... then once certain and after checking surroundings, searches them for valuables, especially the guards...)

"What may I find here..."

Karnage stands guard at the door.

"*Sigh* Where I am from, we let the bodies return to the earth before we rid them of their dignity..."

I'll stand by the door with Karnage holding the torch aloft... As people get further into the room, I'll move up a bit to give more light...

**note the completely mortal mage is not so brave now after his near death experience... :) **
