"The deamon pulled me away to challenge my power. I then vanquished it with my mind and have won favor with the chaos gods. All-in-all, I'd say it's been a pretty good day."

Ugh. Throg will use the Potion of Pain, as well. And then dive into battle at his first opportunity.

"By Grimner's beard, more undead? Come taste my axe!" Dorgath throws his last Firebomb in their midst and charges to attack.

Dorgath's earlier suspicion seems to be correct: the gem appears to be a large pink sapphire. The compartment at the base of the altar contains three items...
  • A stylized charm.
  • A steel sword in excellent condition with an unusual design on its hilt.
  • A map.
Kelgar manages to heal himself with his ring. He then slaps himself on the forehead...

"The orc got away again. Look, he was right there. He must have escaped while we were killing those ghouls."

Orc? What Orc?
That would be Skabnoze, the orc shaman that the party encountered in the first deep of this dungeon. Carrow briefly pinned his foot to the floor with an arrow, and he panicked and escaped with what seems to be an invisibility ring. Then he showed up here with Magrak Manbane (the chaos warrior that had phantom copies of himself), but Carrow and Throg focused ranged damage on him before he could cast many spells. He dropped after Throg used his auto-hit/mass damage chaos artefact combo, and didn't move again for the rest of the fight.

"I thought he was dead."
Kelgar shrugs.

"So did I. He looked like he was in really bad shape. Maybe we'll catch him again. Next time, I'm making sure he's dead. At least I got his key before he disappeared."

"Gar.... he's a troublesome greenskin, that's for sure."

Dorgath tries to identify the items from the compartment.

The Tentacled One
Throg retrieves his axe from the wall while Kelgar helps Dorgath identify the items...

Charm of Learning: This charm allows any warrior to assimilate knowledge required for training more quickly. If equipped, it will decrease the cost of training to the next battle-level by 300 gold, then the charm is used up and is worthless. If sold, the charm would be worth about 100 gold.

Relic Blade: This holy blade is an artifact of great religious significance within the Empire, and was reputed to have been used by the realm's mightiest heroes in numerous battles. The sword has +1 to hit. Worth 400 gold.

The map is hastily drawn and confusing. It seems related to some plot by chaos warriors to prepare for something. Many of the locations referred to on the map aren't accessible from this part of the dungeon. It seems that the chaos warriors were mainly using magic to transport themselves around, but that they were working with orc leaders in different parts of Karak Azgal. The magically locked door at the end of the pit that the party found earlier is confirmed to be a chaos gate, as Throg said. The map notes that the chaos warriors had to enlist the help of someone named "Laranscheld" to create the gateway, and that it leads to an ancient section of the dungeon, far deeper than this one. That level is marked as containing something called the "Star of Dawn." Brought there by orcs. The map doesn't say what the "Star of Dawn" is, though. The map does provide information on the remaining unopened doors for this deep. The northern door in the mummy's lair leads to a "store room." The far southern door on at the end of the long corridor (see post #556) leads to a room labeled "Laranscheld's Den."

"This storeroom looks interesting." Dorgath grabs the items for later division and finishes checking the current room for traps and secret doors.

Oversoul

The Tentacled One
Dorgath fails to locate any traps or secret doors in the temple chamber. Since no one seems to have any objections, the party goes with Dorgath to check out the northern door in the mummy's lair. The journey is uneventful. Kelgar seems to have trouble getting his healing powers to work, but manages to get everyone in good condition by the time they actually reach the door.
