TAG GUARD
As much as I would love to see some of the old, good stuff reprinted again, Apollo is right. I think there are way too many cons to reprinting said cards and let's not forget, they are just plain BROKEN! Basically, though, I think it's not so much the power of the cards, but the names themselves. Compare these two names just for my amusement:
Which would you rather play with?
Fire Diamond 2
Artifact
Fire Diamond comes into play tapped.
T: Add R to your mana pool.
or
Cracked Mox Ruby 2
Artifact
Cracked Mox Ruby comes into play tapped.
T: Add R to your mana pool.
I really think that instead of reprints, the theme and flavor needs to come back of the Power 9 and stuff. Think about Mox Diamond for a second. If it wasn't called a Mox, do you think people would have gone as GAGA over it than if it had been called Jeweled Amulet (Yes, I know that name has been used already.)? Yes, it would have widely been used by the pros, but do you think that ye old newbie might have skipped right over it while flipping through a binder because it didn't have one of the sacred names on it? It's much more likely IMO.
Just to support my point, let me add this true story. I remember when Tempest had first come out. I didn't get many packs of it at all, but I can still remember how I just kind of stared at Lotus Petal just because it had the word "Lotus" and emulated Black Lotus! Later, I remember overhearing two dealers talking about opening boxes of Tempest and one of the guys was bragging (!) about getting 6 of them in a box. Lotus Petals, just Lotus Petals.
Do you think Jeweled Amulet would have been a more respected card if it had been called Mox Quartz or Mox Prism? (Prism would have worked great because you have to charge the artifact with a color.) I'm sure of it.
I really think that instead of requesting reprints, Wizards should focus on the Mox/Lotus/broken cards mythology. Look how thematic and cool Phyrexian and Rathi cards sound. Does anything else quite sound like a Phyrexian Dreadnought?
