I just got a crazy idea - to put entire www.theDojo.com archives on a CD. Or ten. So, how big do you think it would be? My friend has a cable modem and a burner. Also, any ideas as to how to get it all faster (without having to save each file)?

Probably a 500 meg plan. In .docs, maybe a gig. Not pretty. There's no quick way to DL all of it that I know of, especially not if you just want to put it all in .docs, in which case, it's a copy/paste thing. Best of luck to ya', though!

I don't know if there's any way to contact Psylum now, otherwise they might have had some "behind the scenes" type ideas (like zipping/compressing the directories for you, copy of backups, whatever).

If you are going in "front-end", i.e. through the Net, I have no idea how to make the process shorter other than saving each file, which will take quite awhile. :(

Hey dudes, I'm all up for it, but how do you think I should do it? In docs? txt's? HTMLs? Any ideas about anything on this would be appreciated. Also, how about sections of the site? Should I do it by folders? Ex.: You open up the CD. You see a bunch of directories, like in the Dojo sidebar: Decks, Casual Play, etc. Would that be good? I'm just trying to preserve theDojo and years of hard work that went into making it and the articles it concieves if it ever goes offline. And yes, I guess I'll have to contact theDojo's owners/administrators to find if there's any way to get these files faster or zipped. Thanks!

I think txt files would be the best, you don't need the HTML format of each page. Just the directories and the text files in them (and it will save space).

I think a program like Go!Zilla has a leech function... when I get home, I might be able to leech a bunch of files onto CD.

Well, the problem with TXT's is: Cut and paste can be pretty damn exhausting.

No one said it was going to be easy... it'd better if he could contact Psylum, but if ya gotta do it this way <shrug>

Sorry I was away for most of yesterday. I got on the omputer at school in the morning, and didn't get home until about 11 p.m. Thanks for all the suggestions! :) If I make this CD, I hope that Dojo won't want money, because I will not be making any of of it. I would be glad to send you a copy once it's done, at the price of shipping and the CD itself. I will soon send the webmaster an e-mail and we'll see what will happen. Also, does anyone know about any of the copyright issues or anything like that?

If websites work like magazines, anything submitted to them as an article becomes psylum's, I think. Also, it IS a publis domain, right?

It shouldn't be too large if you zip it up as text zips very well (whitespace especially), and the dojo is like 95% text. (you'd only have to download the images once)

Unless there was an agreement between the writers and the Dojo/Psylum, the rights to the material are still the authors'.

Legally, you can archive the material on your computer for your own use (Fair Use Act) but can't distibute it. It does not seem likely that anyone would mind you doing this, though, since there was no official negative response (that I'm aware of) to Mike Flores's call to archive the old Dojo articles, so long as no one is making any money off it.

Worst case scenario is that you can archive the files yourself, the "share" them, á la Napster, with anyone else, who can make their own Fair Use copies.

If I'm not mistaken, Dojo writers (the ones with columns anyway) were paid by Dojo. Does that change things? Also, what should I write in a letter to the webmaster? I will try to start working on the CD approximately next Friday. Zipping is a good idea. Thanks for help!

Just explain to the webmaster what you're trying to do (basically everthing you've told us).

I don't know about the paying authors; you might have to contact them individually to get their permission, but I don't know...

This is going to be embarassing in many ways... Anyone know the adress of "whoever" I should contact about this whole thing? Is it webmaster@thedojo.com ? Or should I even contact the webmaster? If not, then who should I contact?

I would say contact the webmaster or the last editor, whoever that was. Maybe someone who goes to other boards can ask around...
