Played in another tournament at Mr. Cards 'n Comics. The deck is pretty much the same as last week, except for the sideboard. Here's the list:
4 Boggart Ramgang
4 Ball Lightning
4 Jund Hackblade
4 Goblin Outlander
4 Tattermunge Maniac
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Flame Javelin
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Magma Spray
2 Tarfire
4 Dragonskull Summit
4 Graven Cairns
4 Auntie's Hovel
11 Mountain
Sideboard:
3 Chaotic Backlash
3 Volcanic Fallout
3 Doom Blade
3 Deathmark
3 Pithing Needle
The big change comes from the addition of the Pithing Needles in the sideboard, which I traded for with cards from my winnings last week. Here we go!
Round 1: vs. Jason (ended up either 1-2 or 0-2 drop) with WUB Lark
Game 1 didn't let me see much of his deck, as he had to mulligan down to 4 (ouch). I don't have the fastest start in the world, but an Outlander and Hackblade start beating down until I burn him out for the win. I wasn't sure what I was playing against, so I sided in the Needles and Doom Blades. He dropped fallout on turn 3 or 4 and started to drop Wall of Reverence, Reveillark, Sower of Temptation, Mulldrifters, I scoop.... that game was a bit embarassing for me as I didn't realize that the Reveillark gets back things that go to the graveyard at the same time. Game 3 saw a Goblin Outlander and Hackblade drop quickly, but he Pathed the Hackblade. I took advantage of him tapping out for Jace to drop a Ball Lightning to get him at 10. He dropped a Mulldrifter on 5 and I Ball Lightninged again, dropping him to 2. It was over when I flashed the Javelin.
1-0, 2-1
Round 2: vs. Kyle (ended up 3-2) with Merfolk
I thought I had the advantage in this matchup, but I make the mistake of overcommitting to the board by playing 2 Ball Lightnings in one turn to attempt a win. He played Sage's Dousing on the second one and dropped some more things to clutter the board. I had him at 4, but never drew any burn. Game 2 when Maniac, Hackblade, Ball Lightning to have him on the early ropes that he can't recover from. Game 3 saw each of us mull to 6, but he never sees a River Guide and I overwhelm the board bash in for the win.
2-0, 4-2
Round 3: vs. Kevin (ended up 4-1) with 5 Color Control
This is the first time I had played against 5CC since my first month here and I thought I was in for a quick match. Fortunately, I was. The decktype is too slow and can't activately recover from the 13-16 point beatings I can create with frequency. He sides in a lot of hate (Fallouts, Firespouts, Pithing Needles for the FoD's) and never sees any of it. It's hard to win when you untap on turn 4 with 4-7 life.
3-0, 6-2
Round 4: vs. Oliver (ended up 2-2 drop*) with WUG midrange
This is pretty much a nightmare matchup for me. He plays Honor of the Pure and Wilt-Leaf Liege, which gets a lot of creatures out of burn range. He also has Dauntless Escort, Knotvine Paladin, Kitchkin Finks and Baneslayer Angel to make thinks hard. I managed to overwhelm him in Game 2 with an early Outlander, Hackblade (which gets Pathed) and Ramgang, but Game 3 was never a consideration. Funny that the game with 1 Outlander was a blowout but the game with 3 Outlanders was a horrible matchup for me. Under normal circumstances, I'd be 3-1, but I conceded a match to Oliver a few weeks back to increase his chances of prizing out and (considering how I'd be undefeated going into the final round) he decided to repay the favor by giving me a 2-0 match win. Oliver is awesome.
4-0, 8-2
Round 5: vs. Vince (endedup 4-0-1) with Kithkin
We realize we're the only undefeateds left and agree to draw and split the prize ($40 in store credit each). Yet, we decide to play anyway to see what would've happened. Game 1 is a blowout Kithkin beating with 3 Wizened Cenn's and Honor of the Pure facing down a facely Pathed out board on my side. Game 2 follows my standard Maniac, Hackblade, Ball Lightning beating and it's easy from that point on. Game 3 is a bit unfortunate as he had to mull to 5. I Magma Spray away his early Stallwart and have a Maniac, FoD and Hackblade swinging on turn 3, with Lightning Bolt (first time I draw it all night) to deal with a potential threat. He plays a Spectral Procession instead and I Bolt his face, swing with everything the following time (taking out two tokens) and dropping an Outlander. I seal the game after that.
Officially: 4-0-1, 9-3-1. Unofficially, 5-0, 10-3.
The end standings have me in 2nd place, as Vince had better tie-breakers than I did. But I feel comfortable claiming that I won this tournament (shared win). This deck went 5-1 last week and 4-0-1 (with some friendly help) this week. I feel happy with this decklist and hope to continue doing well with the list for weeks to come.
I promised Oliver I'd hold a pack of Magic 2010 out of my winnings for him, but I opened up some cards in my other packs that he might want instead.
