Do most message boards retain members for this long? Even just members who check in only once in a while? It's cool, but seems strange.

Not sure, but there's some stigma about the CPA that just keeps it's "older" members checking in from time to time.

What do you mean "retain"? You mean not delete them, from an admin view? I have no idea, as this is the only board I'm an admin on. I do know that I don't delete anyone who has any posts, but every month I go through and delete users who haven't been on for 5 years and have zero posts.

I've been active (as in 9k+ posts) on another forum for years, but that was closed down by the (never online) admins due to excessive spam. It's really a shame, as I consider many of the people I met there really good friends.

Next to that I'm admin on yet a different forum, which has a lot of active contributors, but has only been around for about 3 years.
