Coupling

While watching my weekly dose of the Fab 5 I saw an ad that made me want to scream really loud: the Series Premier episode of "Coupling". I had heard that this was coming, but I was afraid of the results...my fears were verified.

Some background: "Coupling" is a very successful situation comedy on the BBC (can be seen locally in the 'States on BBC America). Some would call it a rip-off of "Friends". It features three men and three women dealing w/ life, romance, and relationships. There the similarity ends. The writing is ten times better and the actors know how to...well, act. Each character is incredibly complex. It's great...

Now for the Americanized version: the pilot episode was patterned after the first episode of the British version (same writer). Of course many things had to be changed for American (ie shallow, short-attention spanned, and for the most part dim) audiences. Many of the best lines were re-written, however quite a few remained - unfortunately, their context was destroyed.

Since the BBC only makes six episodes a season (they don't have huge corporate sponsors like American networks do) this will mean that there will have to be at least seven original episodes written. I might watch them, but I shudder to think of the results.

If you've never seen the British version or "Friends" you might find it funny. If you've seen "Friends" you might think of it as a cheap rip-off. However, if you've seen the British version you will see it as I do: another great show from oversees ruined by American producers.

I heard about the show but am not really interested in it.

Of course, if I see reruns, I may turn out to like it after all (that's what happened with That 70's Show :) )

If they actually aired the "coupling" then we'd be cooking with gas! But until then I'll keep my raunchy debauchery to the local places of ill rebut and not some hack yuppie show.

The British show is great, probably my favorite sitcom since Seinfeld.
The American show makes me sick just from small doses.

Do watch the British version, if you can. It's really good.

No, that Americanized Iron Chef was quite possibly the worst thing I've ever seen. Shatner? WTF!?!

Right. So, you can understand how bad this show is...

Thanks for the warning. Just makes me sick how all these Americanized imports of Brit shows are suckier than sucky.

Well, at least "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" is still pretty funny...

Whose Line is the worst of all of them! Wayne Brady needs to be shot and Drew Carey is an absolute idiot! If they had brought the original host, Clive Anderson, the show would at least be watchable...

Isn't that show (wliia) kind of supposed to be dumb?

If they'd have stuck with having different people every episode instead of three "regulars" and a rotating spot, it sure would be a lot more interesting. And I agree that Drew Carey is a rather dull host (he almost always gives "a thousand points" -- whee, what fun). They also have the unfortunate habit of having the same players play the same spots in every game, which makes the show sadly predictable at times.

I disagree that it's the worst of the lot though. Ryan and Colin nearly always crack me up. Wayne can't help that he keeps getting stuck being "the song guy."

I really miss Mike McShane from the original though, as well as Josie Lawrence, Sandi Toksvig, and the adoreable Chip Esten (who occassionally pops up on the US version).

It's the only one of the Brit inports (that I've seen both versions of) that doesn't make me positively sick watching it.

I agree that Drew is no great host, but I thought Clive Anderson stunk. Whenever he goes to deliver a funny line, he starts talking really fast like he's nervous about it, and it ends up not being funny. I might be in the minority, but I always felt that they'd be better off with a sign introducing the next game than with Clive.

I only seen snippets of the Canadian version but I think the American show is better. But I agree with Chaos Turtle's observations that the same people play the same parts (not the song stuff, but same people are weather people, or dating game, for instance).

I think Josie has appeared on the American version - not too impressed. Same with that other blond female. Chip (he was in Married with Children towards the end, was he not?) and two other guys who I can't remember right now and this would make more sense are hilarious (one also sings and has appeared on the Drew Carey show when they do WLIIA stunts and another was on another improv show with Chip concerning some hotel).

Brad Sherwood and Greg Krups (sp?) are at least as good as the other guys, esp. Wayne Brady.
There was one time I saw the actress who plays Mimi on the drew carey show on it...

Brad's the first guy I was trying to remember. Greg Proops is okay (he was about a "regular" on the Canadian show too).

I saw that episode too but it didn't really stick in my head...

It was okay, I actually thought that Robin Williams was acting a bit too hard/much.

What about the episode with Cheyna and Ryan and Colin sneaking in free smooches  :p
