Casual Card Hall of Fame Discussion

I don't think that makes you a jerk, just a difference of opinion... :)

But yeah, I'm biased 'cause I nominated another card, but I don't think it's has the most "casual hall of fame worth" of the nominees. But again, I'm not on the committee :)

Personally, Mirrari's Wake is my favorite from that set. When I plop it down I have a 90% win streak! :D I use Decree of Justice backed with countermagic and hopefully a Doubling Season in play and Budda-BING!

I WIN!

Worldgorger is also a game-winner when it plops down.

Neither of these cards are boring and are certainly worthy of being a Tournament Card Hall of Famer.

Death Wish? In "casual" play I can Death Wish for a card I own back at my house 25 miles away....I'll back in 90 minutes

I liked the green enchantment that lets you win the game with when you control 20+ critters but then again, you're already winning. :D

Browbeat is a good solid card just like Van Halen was a good solid rock band and they made it to the hall of fame so why not Browbeat? ;)

Basically, I felt that because of it's renowned tournament combo, Worldgorger Dragon was out. I also didn't like Epic Struggle because it just seems counter-intuitive, particularly for casual play, if I have twenty creatures, then I want to attack, hopefully for a ridiculous amount of damage. Mirari's Wake, I just don't like it that much, personal prejudice I guess, no particularly good reason. I also have never liked the Wishes too much, to either play with or against, you either sit there agonizing over the right card to get, slowing down the game for everyone, or you just kind of get the first card that comes to mind, making it not very impressive.

I was only buying cards back when I was in junior high/high school and actually playing a lot. I had less money than my friends and had a much smaller collection. I'd often bring the whole thing, since it fit into two (now it's three) little Tupperware bins. And if I had a deck with Ring of Ma'Ruf, I always brought the whole thing.

We all liked Biorhythm and it was a pretty quick descision.

However, I want to comment on all of the selections so far, here are the quick color stats:

Artifacts: 6
Black: 5
Blue: 3
Green: 5
Red: 6
White:1
Gold: 2
Land: 0

I'm not sure what to think about these stats but they are worthy of discussing, imo.

I would agree that I often think of artifacts as being casual except for the really "broken" ones like the moxens and a few select othjers but for the most part thay are docile cards. So having 6 of them elected into the CCHOF seems right to me.

But white? My first thoughts of white are Wrath of God, Swords to Plowshares and a plethora of other tournament worthy goodies. Celestral Vergence was the sole white winner and I think that was a good choice by the committee but how many other white cards have been nominated? I haven't researched that because I'm lazy but are there none other white cards worthy of the CCHOF?

There's also not enough nominations either which has been mentioned from time to time by the forum members so that accounts for some of the missing white, maybe. I guess I was looking for a "Normal Curve of Distribution" which is a natural occurance and having had so many sets up for votes I thought I'd give a look-see. And why hasn't there been any Land cards nominated? Hmmmm,....

What do you think?

Well, I'm sure that there are other "worthy" white cards. The problem appears to be that there are more worthy casual cards in the sets that have thoses worthy white cards, at least in OUR view.

I think the main problem is that there's not enough cards being nominated (and some nominations are doubled, which doesn't make sense to me since a card is just listed in the nominations as once, not twice, and has no bearing on the vote. So the second nomination might as well be for another card) which kinda goes into the whole problem of not a lot of activity on the site - pretty much everyone who's active does a nomination, with a few exceptions.

So we're pretty much stuck where we are unless more people come.

Well, truth be told, I think that the second nominations should be considered when voting. It shows that more people agree with the card.

I can think of at least one of my nominations being white (shaharazad), however, I generally dont play a lot of white. My main colors being blue and black, with a bit of green on the side. That is generally where my votes go. Call me biased if you will...

But that would mean the committee is basically useless, as "outside" people would get a vote (or near to it).

All a nomination should be is just a card. I think even if you like the current nominees, either you refrain if you don't like any of the other cards from the set (or don't think of them as casual hall of fame worthy) or nominate another, just to get some more nominations, and let the committee sort it out.

Well... perhaps. But, I've always wondered if cards that have been strongly supported by multiple members and didn't win were overlooked by the committee.

But, c'est la vie. You're right. That's why we have a committee.

As a member, I've never considered a card nominated multiple times any different from a card nominated a single time. But I obviously can't speak for any other committee member... :)

I certainly did not consider who or how many people nominated a card, as has been mentioned, it just seems to run counter to the whole point of having a committee. I would probably consider a sort of generalized popularity of a card in casual play, but I didn't really run into that in my time. The lack of lands is fairly obvious, there are so few printed that would even be thought of, and of those, they are either not interesting enough or are too powerful to be admitted to the CCHOF. As for white, that is a surprise, although as white is my least favorite color personally, I'm not too concerned. Overall, white is often a sort of bland and utilitarian color, which doesn't excite the senses as much as some of the other options. Finally, I'd like to say a word for our current inductee, I thought that the nominated cards were quite good, with at least 3 cards that would have been slam dunks in other sets. I liked Biorhythm though because the effect will almost always be game changing but in a casual way, because it is not an auto-win, there is an element of both control and randomness too the effect, and it rewards playing creatures.
