Multicolored Fun (Thinking outside the Box)
By Stuart Urback
Multi-colored Fun
By Walnut

Ok, so basically, this is the first article I have written about magic ever. As well, I am not a huge deck designer, must of the time I try making wacky decks that do wacky things, like this one. I donít know what Iím doing, so this will be a complete experiment. Basically, I am going to try and make a deck, out of only multi-colored cards, and artifacts. As well, I am going to include at least one card from each guild in the deck, and the deck will be made of mostly commons and uncommons. This is a fun deck that I am going I am going to try constructing. I am going take you through the process too. This may be a complete failure, but I am doing this for the process, not for the product. Get ready for one crazy ride!!!

Since I figured this deck is going to need a heck of a lot of mana fixing, I am going to start with that. Also, now I can play Pillar of the Paruns, crazy huh? First off, I am going to include 10 signets, one from each guild, and 20 lands. This is just to see how the deck will work.

SoÖ right now:

(20) Lands

4x Pillar of the Paruns
4x Forest
4x Island
4x Plain
4x Rakdos Carnarium

(10) Other Spells

1x Izzet Signet
1x Simic Signet
1x Rakdos Signet
1x Azorius Signet
1x Gruul Signet
1x Orzhov Signet
1x Boros Signet
1x Selesnya Signet
1x Dimir Signet
1x Golgari Signet

Note: This is just a test, I am going to play some solitare before testing it out, just to find the manabase, as well, once I figure out what cards I am playing, the # of each specific signet might change.

Now, I figure I need a very solid curve, with mostly creatures. Iíll start off with Wild Cantor just to fix colors. Iím also going to focus on creatures and cards that generate counters, because that is a common theme among Gruul and Simic, two of my favorite guilds.

So here is my first list, this is before I go into solitaire testing

4x Wild Cantor
3x Skyknight Legionaire
2x Golgari Guildmage
2x Dimir Guildmage
1x Ulasht, the hate seed
2x Souls of the Faultless
2x Electrolyze
1x Sky Hussar
2x Hellhole rats
4x Plaxcaster frogling
4x Supply//Demand
1x Anthem of Rakdos
1x Simic Guildmage
1x Pain Magnification
1x Izzet Signet
1x Simic Signet
1x Rakdos Signet
1x Azorius Signet
1x Gruul Signet
1x Orzhov Signet
1x Boros Signet
1x Selesnya Signet
1x Dimir Signet
1x Golgari Signet
4x Pillar of the Paruns
4x Forest
4x Island
4x Plains
4x Rakdos Carnarium

Note, this is just a test. I have no clue how this is going to work out, and I have many other ideas of how to work this deck, but I based it off of 1 of each guild, as well as Supply//Demand was too juicy not to use because it can search for any non-land in the deck! Anthem of Rakdos and Pain Magnification are in as tests to see how quickly the deck can deal a lot of damge, because it is mostly a creature deck with little removal. Here goes nothing. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH.

The first thing I noticed, which I should have long before, was that the mana base was too small. I am going to up the count by a few as well as 4 signets, to put in 4 Journeyerís kite.

SoÖ
Out:
1x Wild Cantor
1x Plaxcaster Frogling
1x Souls of the Faultless
1x Izzet Signet
1x Orzhov Signet
1x Boros Signet
1x Dimir Signet
1x Azorius Signet

In:
4x Swamp
4x Journeyerís Kite

This ups the rare count to 8.

The final thing a learned before I decided I shouldnít make too many changes to the deck before actual playtesting was that the Rakdos Carnarium was no good in the deck. I have decided to add Forbidden Orchard , which hopefully isnít too expensive, or too taxing on the decks resources. If it is just throw some mountains in the deck.

Note: I will be playtesting this deck using apprentice, not magic online.

First Game:

Things were going fine, my mana base was working pretty well whenÖ. A ryusei hit the board, and I realized I had absolutely no answer to big monsters. Since Wild cantor seems to be awful now that I think my mana base is doing ok. I am going to switch to

Out: 3x Wild Cantor
In: 3x Putrefy

The other cool thing I really liked about my deck was the easy searchability with Supply//Demand , which will hopefully work out nicely.

0-1

Game 2:

Honden of Nightís Reach and Wildfire locked down my board, while an uneven mana base kept me from doing anything significant. Then a Myojin of Cleansing Fire and a Honden of Infinite Rage killed me pretty quickly. As well, mana flood during latter half of the game. In other matches I am going to see if that is a problem.

Out: 3 Putrefy
In: 3 Mortify

Note: Some of these changes may force my deck to stop having one of every guild, and even though I will try to stop that from happening, I wonít follow that guide too strictly.

Game 3:

Again Hondens and Wildfire kept me down. I donít know whether or not to create a sideboard against decks like these, or if that isnít in the spirit of the casual format. I am definitely having trouble against a deck like this, and I am not sure what to do. What I do know from this game, is that my Electrolyze , at least in my opinion hasnít been doing too well. The only time I used it was to kill his 1/1ís from my orchard. As well, the fact that I didnít have any threats cheap enough to get out there. Hopefully I can make some changes to my deck, but I donít know what to do, until I have played some more games.

0-3

Game 4:

After this game I am definitely seeing some common themes. My deck has a very difficult problem with creatures. There are some routes I could take with this, and I am not sure which to take. As well, my deck often gets mana flooded, so I am going to take out 2 of the Orchards. As well, I donít think the Electrolyze s belong in the deck either. As well, I donít think the Skyknight Legionnaire s fit well within the deck, I think for the mana it can get, it will need to be a bigger creature, maybe even Razia, Boros Archangel , which would fit well.

Out:
3x Skyknight Legionnare
2x Electrolyze
2x Forbidden Orchard

In:
2x Congregation at Dawn
1x Izzet Chronarch
1x Razia, Boros Archangel
2x Rakdos Guildmage
1x Vigean Intuition (just for kicks)

Hopefully these changes can deal with some of the problems I have been having with other decks.

Game 5

Iím not going to even mention this game. I took the worst opening hand possible, and it was all downhill from there. Not to mention that fact that my opponent was actually playing a deck that was good in a tournament type format. Well, that was fun. (Sarcasm) I figured Iíd play with an actually good hand just to see how my deck did. At first it didnít seem to bad. The game was fairly matched, but at a point I just couldnít continue racing with the deck that had more creatures than mine. It was a downhill slide. Ironically, even though I have learned a lot about the deck. I still havenít won any games.

Out:
1x Ulasht, the hate seed
1x Souls of the Faultless
1x Journeyerís Kite
1x Simic Guildmage
1x Izzet Chronarch

Iím not sure what to put in, there are quite a few choices.

Szadek fits in quite nicely because I have many black cards, but he can be a little expensive.

Moroii also fits in with the theme, but again, I want a fun card, not just one to go in an beat down.

Another Sky Hussar would fit nicely in the deck as well.

So here it is
In:
1x Hellhole Rats
1x Sky Hussar
1x Burning-Tree Shaman
1x Rakdos Guildmage
1x Tibor and Lumia

That means the final decklist now is:

Although the below changes arenít final, there are some ideas I have been tossing around.

Add more variety to the deck. Take out things like the Golgari Guildmage to add 2 more Congregation at Dawn. Then I would have the ability to go grab a different variety of cards in access to different situations. Right now Plaxcaster Frogling is a good 3/3. I am not sure what should be changed, but it isnít good enough to be where it is. Maybe even a Trygon Predator would be good in there, but there are too many 1 ofs to really see the potential. For example, Vigean Intuition will probably have to go as it doesnít work too well as a 1 of. Or, I could up the count to 3 or 4 which would also go along with the search theme. How cool would it be to play Congregation at Dawn one turn, and then the next play Vigean Intuition netting at least three free creatures. These are some things to think about.

On a different note, I have to decide whether or not to move away from my original theme. I donít know if I want 1 card from every guild, as I seem to be focusing on Simic, Rakdos, and Selesnya quite heavily among others. Another thing is about the multi-colored cards. To what extent should that be used. There are many mono-colored cards that interact well with multi-coloreds, and also many cards that use mana types that are dissimilar to their own. These are some things I have to think about going into the next article.

Well, thatís it.

Thereís my first article.

See what you think of the deck, you may like it, you may not. Any comments or suggestions you have for the article would be great, just make sure to make them constructive. If anyone spams me, or writes an overly destructive comment on how bad this article was I will stop opening your e-mails.

Anyway, thanks again, and I hoped you enjoy this first article of Thinking Outside the Box. (title in progress)
